Hi,
I noticed D codes (Dental) are no longer published in HCPCS for 2013, since I dont use D codes this is the first time I noticed. I did some googling and in 2011 they were no longer used in HCPCS?
Im I correct of wrong?

Yes, you are correct. I know very little about dental coding. We taught it at the college but there is really only a handful of every day codes unless you are getting into oral surgery.

I am curious as to why they deleted the D codes in HCPCS. Was it because the HCPCS D codes was not being used? Thanks!

Have a great day.

Dental Codes MIA in HCPCS Code Updates

Posted on 05. Jan, 2011 by jennifer.godreau in Hot Coding Topics
You won’t find D codes in the 2011 HCPCS Level II codes as you have in previous versions of some HCPCS Level II manuals and datasets. To avoid companies inadvertently including copyrighted dental codes as part of the royalty free HCPCS codeset, the American Dental Association removed the HCPCS D codes from the HCPCS Level II national codes dataset.
Unlike the rest of the HCPCS Level II codeset, the dental codes are subject to a royalty from the ADA. To display or print these codesets, the publisher must have a contract with the ADA and pay a royalty fee for the display rights. Free online codeset sites will no longer be able to offer the dental codes. Subscription web-based codesets will need to charge a nominal fee to display the D codes.

I saw this question pop up in the last webinar--I have an AMA 2013 HCPCS Level 2 book by Carol Buck--and D codes are included in my book.
Just an FYI ( for your info :)..In the CDT Book ( current dental terminology --dental codes all start with a "D" , they use to start with an 0--ie 07240---now a D7240 ---and there are certin situations that we can bill dental codes to medical insurance ie..needing a extraction due to a trama, removal of impacted wisdom teeth etc... so it is good that they recognize the dental codes on a medical insurance form.--years ago dental procedures had to be billed as a 41899 unspecified dental procedure w/ report but if you have the D code it helps to be more specific :)----just wanted to share !!

In the AAPC 2013 HCPCS Level II Expert book, the D codes are not included in the book.
